Ambition + Motivation + Mastery = Success There’s been a lot of press comment around the suggestion that women are not vertically ambitious, that they prefer to do a job they enjoy rather than ruthlessly compete for senior management roles. Plainly wrong, since there are also plenty of men who don’t want a top job either; it is not that women who are unambitious but that people find fulfilment at work and in life in different ways. Ambition is the driving force behind individual and organisational achievement, with the power to motivate you to be the best you can be; but it varies so much from one person to the next. My interest was piqued by another article in which a young woman asked if it was okay not to be ambitious but to settle for a job she quite liked, even though  it was not challenging and not aligned with her real interests. If you are not ambitious for career success because you prefer something else â€" as a creative or a carer, or if you want a contemplative life, perhaps, then that’s a worthy aim and great things may come of it, besides the satisfaction of pursuing your first choice. If, however, you can’t be bothered to find out how to qualify for the job of your dreams or to work hard for your ambition; that’s a waste and there’s not much sadder than wasted potential. Ambition helps you uncover the real motivations that bring you full engagement and create conditions that put you in the flow. Mastery and motivation Sometimes thought of as the acceptable face of greed, ambition can be defined as the desire for more. We all know about wanting more, research has shown that ambitious people achieve greater levels of success, whether that be a higher level of education, a more prestigious job, a higher income or more satisfaction in life. It has to be acknowledged that just because you are ambitious that’s no guarantee of success; plenty of people risk all and fail but learning from failure is important too. Real accomplishment requires mastery, otherwise you’re not ambitious, just hopeful. If you are ambitious you also probably want others to recognise your accomplishment. Research demonstrates that recognition is one of the key motivational drivers for the development of almost any type of skill. Motivation to achieve is predicated on two factors; the likelihood of achieving the desired goal and the value of the perceived rewards. Ambition, achievement and risk-taking tend to be valued in our society, though not by everyone, of course. Diversity of opinion at work is important too; it drives innovation and creativity. 10Eighty looked at women in the workplace earlier this year to examine what helps their careers and what hinders. Many see gender equality as a matter of fairness, but for business, it’s about access to talent. Achieving gender parity will make the workplace better for women and men as all will benefit from programmes that support flexibility in juggling professional and personal commitments. Gender parity at work Research by Catalyst (2004) and McKinsey Company, (2010) found that women in leadership roles bring a diversity of skills and experiences to the decision making table. More diversity in the type of people involved in leadership is often used as a proxy for more diversity of thought in leadership. Greater numbers of women in leadership roles bring more diverse skills and experiences to the decision-making table. The ILM points out that it makes sound commercial sense to promote women to senior positions, and reflect the broader consumer base of many businesses. Women are increasingly powerful consumers with a growing share of the UK’s personal wealth and 80% of purchasing power. Given the increasing skill and leadership talent shortages, supporting ambitious, well-qualified women to make the most of their skills represents a good return on the investment made in their education and career development.

There are many places where this will come in handy. You do not have to worry about being fired because you cannot read and do not want to be a liability to your employer.Your hobbies can be a big part of your resume. If you have ever had an interest in a particular sport, or if you had the desire to try an outdoor activity, you will be listed as a 'tourist'. Many employers like to hire someone who has an interest in other people's hobbies, and they are usually willing to pay more money to get a person who is interested in other people's hobbies. Your future employer is more likely to hire you if you can show them you enjoy other people's hobbies, then if you can show them you like their hobbies.A very important point to be made is th at it is important to do not get overwhelmed. One resume writing lesson to remember is that you need to go back and write your resume until you have it down in one piece. If you try to rush this process, you will not make it through the interview, and this will lead to you being rejected. Go over your resume, ask your friend to read it, and read it again until you have it down.In order to write a resume that will impress your future employer, you need to remember that there are many different skills required to be successful at this. If you are trying to sell yourself to someone that needs one skill, then they will easily choose someone else. Its NOT a good look.So what should you do?Tell them youre job searching and ask for advice, or ask a question. Ive seen this work for cold-approaching strangers on LinkedIn too, at companies you want to work for.Example first message:Hi John,Quick question I saw you used to work at Microsoft. Would you recommend their Marketing group? I recently graduated with my degree in Marketing, and Microsoft is one of the top firms on my list, but I always like to ask someone who has direct experience with a company what they thought of the environment.Now John would respond and give you his opinion.And after this, you can let the conversation continue a bit, and then ask for help finding a job or getting an interview more directly.For example, maybe John tells you the marketing group is great and would be great for a new graduate like yourself.After a few back-and-forth messages, you could send this:Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. Im going to apply. I know a top company like Microsoft must receive a lot of applications online though, so I did think to ask before sending anything do you happen to be in touch with any of the hiring managers or HR people over there still who you might be able to make a casual introduction to?Now youre asking or hinting at the fact that youd like an introduction if possible.Thats how to let it flow naturally into a conversation with someone who you messag ed out of the blue, or someone you already know but arent close with or havent talked to recently.Step 3: Repeat the ProcessGo through your network, making sure people know youre job hunting.Approach people to ask if they can connect you to certain companies. Try to do your research and have an idea which companies theyve worked with, etc. Instead of just saying, Can you help me get any job at all?Thats not nearly as good as saying, I saw you worked at XYZ Company I was wondering ifAnd just keep repeating. If your network is small and you run out of people, use the scripts I gave you above to cold-approach people on LinkedIn. Build your network further!Will this get you hired every single time? No, I cant promise that. But its where Id start! Its definitely the fastest way to get a job because of the 3 big reasons mentioned at the start of the article.3 Rules to Follow when Networking to Find a Job:1. In general, dont come right out of the gate asking for a big favor to a stranger, or an acquaintance you dont know very well. This includes asking for an introduction right away, asking them to look at your resume/CV, or attaching your resume/CV into an email. Dont do that!2. Ask questions and make it a real conversation. Dont just seem like a taker who only wants to use them for something.3. Show appreciation. Thank them for any info/answers they give to your questions. Their time is valuable so show you appreciate it. They dont owe you anything. Be appreciative.The closer your relationship is with someone, the more you can break these rulesIf its a parent or family member, you can obviously just say, Is there anyone at Microsoft you could get my resume in front of to land me an interview?Same goes for an academic adviser or former university professor. They should want to help you find a job.But thats not going to work with other people in your network. So use your best judgment.If you follow these steps above and focus on this at the beginning of your job sear ch, youll boost your chances of getting a job much faster, with less effort and less hassle.Now, you might need to use other methods to find a job, too. (Click HERE to learn tips to get started on Twitter and why it is useful.) Since I wrote that post, there have been so many new Twitter applications that can be useful for job seekers. Its hard to keep up with all of them! Luckily, Tawny Labrum of AskBinc just posted a comprehensive compilation of 15 great Twitter applications and invited me to share it with my readers! ConnectTweet See what is going on inside the doors of a potential company, through the Tweets of their employees.   ConnectTweet allows individuals at the front lines of the company to add a #tag to their company relevant tweets, those tagged tweets are then filtered and posted to the companies @orgs Twitter account, allowing the companys followers to clearly see the human voices on the inside. TwitterJobCast A local job search that allows you to see who is hiring on Twitter by browsing for jobs by city, state or zip code. It works by making requests to the Twitter API. Additionally, the Yahoo! Maps API is used to translate locations into geocodes for use with the Twitter API. TweetJobSearch An open source search engine for jobs posted on Twitter, TwitterJobSearch has posted 44,165 new jobs in the last 7 days.   Many of the jobs listed are tech related jobs, but through their search you can look for the position you want in the city you want. Twellow Also know as the Yellow Pages for Twitter it allows you to cut through the clutter Twitter sometimes creates.   It enables you to find real people who really matter.   The Twellow service grabs publically available messages from Twitter, analyzes and then categorizes the tweets into categories.   By using this service you can narrow your searching to specific niches and find who you are looking for, that way you can follow specific Tweeters and network your heart away. TweetBeep TweetBeep is like Google Alerts for Twitter TweetBeep is very simple, you signup for an account, confirm your email and set up alerts to be delivered to your email.   Want to know whenever someone posts a job for a Java Dev?   Set up and alert for that and you will be notified through email on a daily or hourly basis. HashDictionary #Hashtags are a way on Twitter to group certain conversations about a particular subject.   If you want your Tweet to be included in a special grouping put the groups #hashtag somewhere in your Tweet and it will be grouped with other updates using the same hashtag.   HashDictionary.com is a community based dictionary for hashtags on Twitter. Hash tags have been described as collective digital bookmarks and are widely used throughout Twitter. If you want to you can also search the most popular hashtags at #hashtags.org or Tagal. JobMotel Allows you to search web developer jobs listed on Twitter.   From what I can tell JobMotel mines Twitter for web dev related jobs and rss feeds them onto their site. TweetDeck One of the more popular Twitter 3rd party application, Tweetdeck is a desktop application that acts as your personal browser for staying in touch with whats happening by connecting you with your contacts on Twitter.   With TweetDeck you are able to create groups from Twitter users and have all those tweets filtered into one screen.   It also lets you do a search for a specific topic and get a live feed every time someone Tweets about that topic.   It helps out with your job search because you can create a filter for the companies you are interested in, see what the Twitterverse is saying about them and be aware when they post open jobs. TweetMyJobs TweetMyJobs is a service that brings recruiters, hiring managers and job seekers together on Twitter.   They create Twitter Channels for major cities and job types, and an easy-to-use interface to subscribe to those channels. You will get instant notification of any new jobs as a text message on your cell phone. In your job search all you have to do it create an account on Twitter and TweetMyJobs, subscribe to the desired Job Channels, and have any new openings automatically sent to your cell phone as a text message via Twitter. You can also access job openings on the web at TweetMyJOBS or Twitter. VisualCV Not quite a Twitter Application, but you can create your online resume on VisualCV and include a link to your resume in your Twitter Bio. TwitterSearch You can find job information on Twitter Search.   Type in the keywords that are important to you it will display results with all tweets that have those keywords, you can either view all the tweets and follow the users or create a RSS feed to read the results later.   Other Twitter Search applications are Just Tweet It and TwitterTroll . NearByTweets Search Twitter by Keyword and Location find out if there are any jobs available in your area or the area you want to work. Twollo Twollo allows you to automatically follow users that have similar interests as you.   You tell the application what you like or what you are interested in and the program will generate tweeters for you to follow that have similar interests as you. Twitscoop Find out what is being talked about on Twitter right now.   You can search by keyword, allowing you to see realtime info on jobs and networking events.
