Three Resume-Killing Mistakes to Avoid

Three Resume-Killing Mistakes to Avoid Three Resume-Killing Mistakes to Avoid Your resume is a tool that can open doors anywhere you go, whether you want that to be a Fortune 500 company or an innovative start-up just down the road. Even so, there are tricks to writing a professional resume and some very serious pitfalls to avoid at all costs: Appearing uneducated or inattentive. No matter what message you have to convey, your resume is going to be tarnished by anything that makes you look like you’re not paying attention or you simply lack the skills you claim to possess. Typos, incorrect contact information, meaningless jargon-filled phrases and non-typical formatting are some of the biggest ways to show a future employer that you’re not a serious candidate. Check your resume carefully or have a friend read your resume before you start your job hunt and you’ll see much better results. You want to appear educated, polished and accessible to your future employer, and the way to do that is by presenting a neat and simple resume. Not treating your resume like a marketing tool. Despite what someone may have told you, your resume is a tool. It’s a marketing tool, in fact, to help you sell yourself to future employers. If you treat it like an encyclopedia entry instead of the detailed presentation on why you’re the perfect person to solve the problems your target business is experiencing, you might as well not bother. McDonald’s loves encyclopedia-like applications if you want a McJob, simply recite your particulars without demonstrating your value. Lying, lying, lying. You may think that a simple fudge is no big deal, especially if you’ve gotten away with it in the past, but it’s easier today than it has ever been to check the personal information of anyone. Your almost-degree, over-inflation of sales numbers or purposefully vague employment dates can be verified with a simple search of the web. Always tell the truth, even if it pains you, and if those three classes you need to finish your degree really make that much difference in light of your vast experience, go back to school and finish up. Bottom line? Don’t make the mistake of showing a potential employer that you can’t be trusted â€" without that trust, there is no job and no future.

Women are saddled with almost $1 trillion of student loan debt

Women are saddled with almost $1 trillion of student loan debt Women are saddled with almost $1 trillion of student loan debt According to a Glance report, released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, America rivals every country except Luxembourg  in terms of how much it spends on college. Soup to nuts, the U.S shells out about $30,000 per student a year, which is almost double the amount of the average developed country A sharp increase in financial aid, lack of student funding, and a scarcity of funds to pay faculty members that are in increasingly high demand, has concurrently made college tuition and student loan debt more expensive than they’ve ever been before.AAUWFollow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Currently, the United States owes $1.46 trillion dollars in student loan debt. As of 2019, women account for two-thirds of this staggering figure, with a collective $929 billion.  A recent review published in the National Bureau of Economic Research occasioned several be havioral factors and developmental differences that explain why women vastly outnumber men in most Universities. “Boys often mature more slowly than girls. In grades K-12, boys tend to have a higher incidence of behavioral problems (or lower level of non-cognitive skills) than girls. Girls spend more time doing homework than boys,” the authors explained.Women also take out more student loans than men do, though many have trouble paying them off after graduation due to the gender pay gap. The median wage disparity between men and women is frequently quoted as being in the neighborhood of 80 cents for every dollar (it’s actually closer too 77 cents). This figure is often further controlled by other factors, however. For instance, African-American women earn about 61 cents for every dollar earned by their counterparts, Native American women earn about 58 cents to every dollar, and Latina women typically earn around 53 cents for every dollar. This means on balance, women lack the disposable income to take care of their student loan debt.  As the new report published by The American Association  Of University observed, not only does the pay discrepancy impact graduates  right out of the gate, the gap widens as professionals  progress.“Women college graduates working full-time are paid 18% less than their male peers one year after graduation. By four years after graduation, that gap widens to 20%. Overall, women with bachelor’s degrees working full-time make 26% less than their male peers. Lower pay means less income to devote to debt repayment. ”  Thirty-four percent of all women and 57% of African American women said that they were unable to afford essential expenses like rent or their mortgage, in 2018 because they were paying off their student loan debt. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

5 Useful Tips for Unemployed Law Grads

5 Useful Tips for Unemployed Law Grads 5 Useful Tips for Unemployed Law Grads It’s also worth thinking carefully about whether you truly want to practice law. If the answer is no, it’s far better to realize that now â€" before you’ve committed several more years to developing an increasingly specialized skill set. The decision not to practice can be a challenging one to make, but there are lots of contented ex-lawyers in the world (in fact, 24% of JDs who passed the bar in 2000 are no longer practicing law), and you can ultimately be one of them.  Law school sharpens a very specific skill set, and these skills are transferable.  If you’re having doubts, now is the time to explore your other options. If you’ve made the decision that you do not want to practice law, an important thing to do is decide how to market yourself and your skills.  Were you part of a law review?  That might make you a good candidate for a writing or editing job.  Were you extremely passionate about a certain area of law?  You could become a lobbyist in that area.  With so many options, it is crucial to know how to frame your law school years in a way that works in your favor. If you’ve graduated from law school and you don’t have a job, well, you’re not alone! (Only 64.4% of the class of 2012  had jobs requiring bar passages by nine months after graduation.) What can you do? If youre an unemployed law grad, here are five suggestions. Pass the Bar Exam First, and most critically, assuming you might ever want to practice law, do everything in your power to pass the bar exam on the first try! In some states, passing the bar is almost assured if you study and show up healthy and focused. In others, it’s a huge challenge (Hello, California!). Regardless, this is the time to get it done. You know how you learn and study best, and where your strong and weak areas are, so don’t just blindly follow a commercial study program and assume you’ll pass. (Remember: Basically everyone who fails the bar took a commercial bar prep class.) It’s critical to ensure you’re  actively learning  the material and routinely tracking your progress. And pay close attention to  your physical and mental health  â€" many stories of bar failure start with  extreme anxiety,  excess stress,  insomnia, depression, and  physical illnesses. As you study, schedule in relaxation breaks, exercise, and time to prepare and eat healthy food. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s critical to fuel your brain and body for the grueling task ahead! Use Time off to Explore Your Career Preferences It’s easy to panic and apply blindly to any job that appears on your school’s listserve, but it’s ultimately preferable, and more productive and effective, to engage in some self-analysis about your skills, personality, work style, and job preferences. There are a variety of career assessment tools that might come in handy in this analysis. (And it’s worth thinking about  how your personality fits into the legal world.) It can also be hugely useful to talk with practicing attorneys, not to beg them for a job but simply to find out more about what they do all day, so you can see how different legal jobs align with your preferences. Even if you’re studying for the bar exam full-time, you still need to eat lunch!  Setting up one informational interview a week  can pay huge dividends going forward (and doesn’t take  too  much time). Think About Whether You Really Want to Be a Lawyer It’s also worth thinking carefully about whether you truly want to practice law. If the answer is no, it’s far better to realize that now â€" before you’ve committed several more years to developing an increasingly specialized skill set. The decision not to practice can be a challenging one to make, but there are lots of contented ex-lawyers in the world, and you can ultimately be one of them. Consider Entrepreneurial Legal Paths If you’re sure you want to be a lawyer, give some thought to opening a solo practice or starting your career as a freelance attorney. Numerous resources exist to  help new grads open solo practices  and  get freelance legal work. Yes, it can seem scary and intimidating to work on your own right out of law school, but lots of people have done it, and it’s not impossible! If you really want to be an attorney, and no one will hire you, hanging a shingle can allow you to live the dream…and ultimately have more autonomy and control than you’d have working for someone else. Plan Your Job Search It’s probably too much to expect that you’ll engage in a full-on job search while studying for the bar exam (and see #1). But you do need to ensure everything is ready to go as soon as you finish taking the bar. Is your resume up to date? Do you have a basic cover letter ready to go? Are you monitoring job resources to see what’s available? Have you gotten feedback on your interview skills? Are you in contact with your school’s alumni career folks for advice? Bonus points if you actually apply to some jobs while you’re studying for the bar exam, but â€" at a minimum â€" have everything ready to go for after you’ve completed the exam (and hopefully passed)! Good luck!

9 surprising truths about dating and relationships at work

9 surprising truths about dating and relationships at work 9 surprising truths about dating and relationships at work It probably comes as no surprise that out of all of the people who are in relationships, a huge proportion of them started at work. It makes a lot of sense though, doesn’t it? â€" most workplaces are filled with grown, unmarried adults with expendable cash who spend a lot of time together. On that note, here are a few facts about dating and relationships in the workplace that may or may not strike you as eye-opening: Fewer employees are dating coworkers  today than in the past ten years. Even so,  36%  of employees are in a romantic relationship with someone they work with: that’s one in three! More than half  of American professionals say they have participated in an office romance at one point More people meet their romantic partner at work (22%) than through friends (18%), online (13%), or finding each other during a night out (10%). 31%  of people who enter into a relationship with a coworker end up marrying that coworkers. 35%  of women who have dated a coworker dated somebody who was above them in the org chart compared to just 23% of men. 37%  of work couples keep their relationship secret. Most work relationships  start when coworkers run into each other outside of the work setting. Most people  are opposed to office romances;  6 percent of workers believing that they’re completely unacceptable, 33 percent disapproving when they’re between co-workers at different levels; and 30 percent believing that co-workers who collaborate on projects shouldn’t collaborate on anything else. The “why” behind workplace relationshipsIt’s no wonder so many relationships start at work considering that, as U.S. workers, we will typically spend  90,000 hours  working during a lifetime (or,  1,680 hours per year  in the office). Perhaps an even stronger factor is that we spend more time with coworkers with than with our partners or children. All of this time together leads to inevitable learning about one another. You learn about your coworkers’ interests, observe their reactions to a variety of situations, and often spend time talking about life both inside and outside of work. And all of this learning about one another closely mimics the courtship process, inevitably resulting in new romantic relationships in many cases. So, what’s allowed when it comes to dating at work? Many people keep workplace relationships under wraps because they assume they’re forbidden, but most organizations  don’t  have a blanket policy that forbids all relationships. (Note: We may see m ore non-fraternization policies emerge in light of the #MeToo  era.) Whether dating a coworker is permitted or not will depend on your employer’s policy, so the first step if you’ve entered into a relationship is to check the policy. When dating is allowed and there is any mention of it in policy-form, your employer might require disclosure of the relationship so they can take measures to prevent conflicts of interest; that is, your significant other should not directly supervise you or make decisions about your wages, for example.Tips for if you’re thinking about (or are already in) a relationship with a coworkerIf you’re open to dating a coworker or are already passed the point of no return, at least be cautious and follow the rules: Never date your boss and never date somebody at work to boost your career or get ahead. Keep your personal relationship and your professional relationship as separate as possible; avoid public displays of affection and when you’re out of the office, try not to have every conversation be about work! Review the policy at your workplace and make sure your relationship is permitted and you’ve taken appropriate steps to disclose it, if required to do so. Prepare for the worst early on. There’s a solid chance that any relationship can end in a breakup eventually. With that reality in mind, consider and discuss with your partner how you’ll continue your professional roles should your personal relationship end. Even if you do your best to work this point out, in the end, one of you might have to look for a job somewhere else to keep your sanity. Know your employer. In other words, know what current and previous employees are saying about your employer to learn what to expect in practice and other details like whether workplace relationships already exist in the company (and if so if they’re done openly or in secret), and how people generally feel about it. This is all great food for thought, but at the end of the day…”the heart wants what it wants”, right? Or whatever that pop singer said in that one song. The truth is that you’re likely going to have a relationship with who you want to regardless of the rules…so if it’s going to be with someone at work, it’s always good to know what you’re getting yourself into! This article was originally published on Kununu.

How Companies Can Better Support Working Parents

How Companies Can Better Support Working Parents How Companies Can Better Support Working Parents The daily challenges and sacrifices made by parents who balance work and family are nothing new. In part 1 of this article, I interviewed several women about what it meant to be a working mom. Here in part 2, we discussed what the role an organization plays in the parental leave process, and what companies can do to better support working parents. Here’s what they had to say! When it came to preparing for maternity(mat) leaves, the attitude of leadership within an organization, played a huge role on how comfortable women felt stepping away from their jobs. During her first leave, Noemie Patocka , Divisional VP of HR recounts a conversation she had with her manager, who said “You have 40 years to work, but only 1 year like this to spend with your family.” She remembers feeling like if this mentality could come from leadership, then she could feel comfortable taking her mat leave without feeling penalized. Jyll Saskin Gales , is Canadian Google employee, whose team and manager are based in the U.S.. She was nervous because “the laws around maternity leave in Canada are different than in the U.S., so I made sure before I was even pregnant that my manager knew the legal difference and implications.” Most women agreed that it’s important to talk to your manager and HR, and let them know any struggles you’re going through and any accommodations you might need throughout the process. At the time when Saskin Gales was pregnant, she was also being considered for promotion. She let her boss know that she would be taking time for mat leave, in good faith that this would not affect her eligibility for promotion. She was right, and she got the promotion! This made her feel more confident going into her leave knowing that she can come back to a great job. In a less positive light, Marina Byezhanova , founder of Pronexia recounts her experience being pregnant at her first employer. Her bosses, colleagues, and even HR harassed her with questions about her pregnancy. “It was my first 3 months, and I wasn’t ready to tell them yet. I went for lunch, and my boss was trying to get me to have a drink as an attempt to get me to tell her”. She explains that it was even difficult for her to ask for time off to go to appointments, and do the things she needed to take care of herself and her baby. Upon returning from her maternity leave, Patocka expressed a sense of excitement to jump back in and see her peers again. She explains that being home when you’re used to working can sometimes feel isolating, and led her to feel a sense of FOMO. However, all her these feelings neutralized after a few weeks. When Byezhanova returned from her maternity leave, it re-confirmed why she needed to leave her organization. When she started her own company, she had a lot of freedom and flexibility. Now as her company grows, there’s naturally less freedom, but the flexibility to stay home when she needs and not explain why she can’t be physically in the office is imperative, and something she says every adult needs. Chi  Nguyen , VP Projects, says that though we are lucky in Canada to take up to 18 months for maternity leave, she ended up returning after 10, as the reality of maternity leave is capped financially. She feels that while EI pays up to a capped 55% in Canada, organizations are not supportive enough in providing additional financial support to make up the difference. She says that “this makes it hard because it can force you to choose between making a living, or raising a family, when in reality, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice one for the other.” Most women agreed that companies could make things easier on everyone by centralizing resources pertaining to information about mat leave. Patocka explains that “Making it easy for expecting moms to find information on things like benefits, and how access to the needed forms and documents is key”. Navigating things is confusing and hard because the process of going on maternity leave can be complicated and convoluted, and coordinating with both the organization as well as the government can be a challenge. Saskin Gales says “It would be helpful if there was someone in every company that could be a leave advocate. Many women end up taking on the extra responsibility of helping their colleagues navigate all the information around leaves”. Physical office barriers are also a common problem with many working moms. “Things like parking spots near the entrance, or having physical nursing rooms set up for moms is highly needed, especially across the U.S. where women often return to work before they are done nursing”, says Patocka . Jessica Laird , Content Specialist, recommends that organizations open up their lines of communication by asking parents what they need in order to make more meaningful policies, and to create better working environments for parents, rather than just trying to guess blindly. What all women agreed on is that organizations must trust their employees, and allow flexibility if they want to accommodate their working parents. Organizations and managers need to give people the chance to work from home, autonomy to manage their own schedules, and be accepting and understanding when your personal life happens, says Patocka . Byezhanova says that “it’s up to leadership to create an environment where feeling scared to take time off does not exist. It’s awkward for both parents to have to tell their bosses when they need to go for appointments, and the general culture needs to be accommodating for both mothers and fathers”. Nguyen  explains that her current organization is amazing when it comes to accommodation.  She gets to work remotely, and has total autonomy over her day. With modern technology,   she can achieve the exact same level of work at home by communicating over Slack, and she has complete trust from her company that she’s spending her day wisely. Flexible companies know the importance of focusing on the results delivered, versus optics of hours spent working in the office. For working parents, big changes can come from small actions on behalf of organizations. When to Say No to Boring, Bad Work Projects - The Muse

When to Say No to Boring, Bad Work Projects - The Muse When to Say No to Boring, Bad Work Projects Your boss asks you take on a new project, but you’d really rather pass. That’s because- from where you’re sitting- it seems unnecessary. And you’re busy enough with tasks that actually mean something. Yet, even knowing this, you struggle to just say no. While a well-meaning friend might tell you to “pick your battles,” that advice is easier to give than it is to apply. You want your manager to have a favorable impression of you, but even more importantly, you want to be on the same page regarding your role. Questioning an assignment isn’t simply about maximizing your time: It’s about clarifying your priorities. That’s why it’s so important to properly select when you’ll pitch in and when you’ll push back. Here’s a handy little guide, so you’ll know what to do the next time you’re asked to do something that looks like a waste of time: When You Should Do It If You’ve Never Done it Before “You can’t judge it until you’ve tried it” is true for more than that obscure dish at a potluck. Trying new things is how you build your skill set, and it could be that you’ll be particularly adept at (or really enjoy) that seemingly random task. It’s shortsighted to think something that requires basic skills automatically can’t teach you anything new. It could be filling in a gap that’ll help qualify you for other opportunities, or complement the work you’re doing. Truth talk: Is it possible that it’ll be as worthless as you imagined? Yes. But you can only turn something down sight unseen so often. Say yes this go-round, and next time, you’ll have a leg to stand on when you suggest your time could be better spent elsewhere. If It’s Really Important to Your Boss You know that pet project you’ve been eyeing that’s not 100% in your job description? Well, if you’re known for saying “That’s not my job!”- your manager could respond to your proposal using that same retort. Taking on that extra (kinda dull) project only builds goodwill between you and your boss. Even if there’s no dream project you’re saving up capital for, being there in a pinch still counts. My grandfather used to say, “Help when it’s needed, not when it’s convenient.” For all that you don’t want every crummy project dumped in your lap because you’re known for saying, “OK, fine,” you do want your team to know that you’re someone they can turn to when they need help- even if the task at hand isn’t glamorous. If It’s Part of Your Job Yes, this is worth mentioning, no matter how obvious it may seem. Everyone has aspects of their job they’re less excited about, but it’s unrealistic to think you can ignore them. While you should be sure to let your manager know that you’re interested in more challenging projects, if you’re in a junior role that’s set up as a “catch all” for grunt work, completing it is part of your job. So, keep an eye out for how you might innovate or additional ways to contribute, but know that paying your dues is one of the steps on the ladder to advancement. When You Should Push Back When You Truly Don’t Have the Time It’s unrealistic to think a manager knows exactly what’s on each and every employee’s plate at a given moment. Even if she’s in the loop as far as the scope of your work and key projects, she can’t read your mind (or in this case, your to-do list). She won’t know that those other “small tasks” have actually taken you three straight days and you don’t have the bandwidth for a new project- unless you tell her. One of my favorite lines to use in this situation is “Could you help me prioritize my project list?” That way you’re not flat-out telling your boss “no,” rather you’re starting a discussion about the best use of your time. When You Always Get Stuck With It You have unique talents and abilities, but how can you make that clear if you spend your days doing the menial tasks only you seem to get assigned? People can fall into routines, and if your colleagues always pass on boring projects and you always offer to pitch in, the assumption may be that you don’t mind. From there, you become the go-to person for that kind of work. If this sounds familiar, you definitely want to speak up. Politely decline the next sub-par project that comes your way by mentioning that you’re already committed to working on another assignment. And the next time you check in with your boss, reiterate your desire for a more balanced workload. When You Think It’s a Seriously Bad Idea Being a go-to person is about more than saying “yes.” It also entails sharing your insights and saving the team from going down a path you think could be fraught with issues. If you think that (beyond being annoying) a course of action is a waste of resources or is somehow setting the team up to fail, you should always push back. Keep in mind that questioning if a certain course of action makes sense doesn’t have to be combative. When you ask more about the context or direction of a project- because you want to get it right- you’ll learn more about it and maybe realize it’s not so pointless. Or, maybe you’ll still be against it. (If the latter is true, Muse writer Kat Boogaard has great tips for giving your boss this uncomfortable feedback.) You want to find the balance- to be seen as helpful and dependable, but to feel comfortable speaking up and managing your workload. Before you grudgingly accept another task you’re pretty sure is unnecessary (or dig your heels in), think through the factors above to decide whether taking a stand is worth it.
